Music

I find music to be a powerful mode of communication, recollection, and connection.

I organize a yearly "3 Day Jam", during which a large part of our community converges for three days and plays as much music as we can - some years the emphasis on music is larger, some years various games and other activities come to the fore, but always it makes for a memorable time.

I also participate in a weekly music session with good friends. Some of us have been playing music together for well over 15 years, and it makes a wonderful way of connecting.

Below is a bit of information on some of the musical projects that I've been involved with.  I will be including more detailed information at a later time, but for now enjoy the sample clips.

West Coast Christmas

 in 2004 Joyelle Brandt got a gaggle of musical friends together to record a Christmas album. With the help of producer and sound engineer extraordinaire Sam Ryan, we converged on Dunbar Heights United Church (Where Perpetuum's "Midnight Sun" was also recorded), and spent one day recording a host of songs, including numerous small group pieces and two choral works. The samples below are from the offerings I participated in.

 

"Angels we have Heard on High" was adapted and led by Scott Geiler.

Song for  a Winter's Night provided an opportunity for a brief Perpetuum Reunion: Yael Wand, Christina Zaenker and Myself performed it.
(We all sang, Yael and I played guitar, Christina rocked the Cello)

Donna Nobis Pacem was great fun to record as a full group

Finally, Stacy Hilton, Christina Zaenker and I recorded Christ Child's Lullaby.
(We all sang, I played the guitar and once again Christina wrought musical heaven on the Cello)

Michael Kelly - Fields of the North

In 2003 Stacy Hilton, Michael Makowichuk and I began playing together as "Polaris Rising". Michael asked invited us to join him for the recording of "Irish Boy" on his FIelds of the North album, and below is a sample of the end result.
Since then Polaris Rising has transformed into a weekly jam session hosted at various member's houses over the years.

Sight UNseen

In 2001 Lisa Mitchell and Jessica Oman parted ways with the Joyelle Brandt Trio, and struck out on their own as Sight UNseen. I joined them, and together we worked on several songs, played a few fun gigs, and in 2002 began recording an album. Sadly, Sight UNseen disbanded before the CD was finished, but here are a few rough samples (one still has the click-track in it).

Perpetuum - Midnight Sun

The contemporary folk trio of Perpetuum - Yael Wand, Daniel Lindenberger and Christina Zaenker - was a regular feature on many stages in Vancouver between 1997-2000. In 1998, the trio began working with Sam Ryan to produce a nine-track album, Midnight Sun. In 1999, even before the album was released, the title track was awarded second place in the folk category of the Centre for Digital Imaging and Sound's (now the Art Institute of Vancouver) song-writing competition. The album featured the trio's unique instrumental arrangements and signature heavenly harmonies: Yael on vocals and guitar, Daniel on vocals, guitar, water-bottle drum and piano, and Christina on vocals and cello.
